Thailand advice please.
I've been on holiday to Thailand a few times, the last being Ko Chang about 3 0r 4 years ago before it all seriously kicked off with the red shirts and yellow shirts. We were in Bangkok a few months before the big flood.

I know some of you boys live out there or visit frequently so where better to ask than here? So, is it still a safe place to go on holiday with my missus and if it is, where would be nice and not too touristy?

One of my pals says Canchanapuri (sp?) is lovely and another says it's a mosquito-infested shithole. He says Chiang Rai is the place to go.

So, safe or should we swerve and go somewhere else? I'll be sad if it's not safe as I love Thailand and think the Thai people are on the whole a nice bunch. They seem to have a good sense of humour and when something goes wrong do what we do- laugh their bollocks off and shrug their shoulders.

My Patpong and Soi Cowboy days are over (to be honest they never really started). I want nice scenery, a bit of peace and quiet, a jungle curry and a cold Chang. Getting shot in the face I can live without.

Any information gratefully accepted. Cheers.

A far as the reds/yellows go, it's as safe as it's been for a few years. That stuff had nothing to do with tourists anyway.
I noticed the police/army are more visible than I've seen before and they are apparently cracking down on the petty stuff - taxi scams etc.

I fancy a trip to Siem Reap and Angkor Wat next time.

Re: Thailand advice please.
Still safe as ever mate, the people can be a bit moodier at times - especially in the north, but other than that it's still the same place, just maybe a bit more touristy.

As to where to go, it really depends on what time of year you are planning on visiting. I lived in Chiang Rai Oct, Nov & Dec last year, it's a nice spot though there's not a huge amount to do or see around town, but there are some nice day trips.

Been to River Kwai a few times too, also a nice spot though only been there for a couple of days at a time. It's a touristy place though, full of day trippers from BKK.

Really all depends on whether you fancy being close to a beach or not, also how long are you going out there for? If two weeks, a week in Chiang Rai and a week by the beach could make for a good trip...

As ever, sound advice from Deano.

Wikitravel has a couple of good tour itineraries for the Chiang Mai / Chiang Rai region. Hire a car or bikes and drive around the north to places like Pai, Mae Salong and Mae Hong Song. Nice part of the world.

Is it safe?

No, it's very dangerous.

What is it you want to see or do ?

I fancy Cambodia for a nose around a few temples and the killing fields

If it Its just a beach holiday you are after you can do a lot worse than Mexico

Re: Thailand advice please.
Cheers chaps.

Want to go for a couple of weeks in June or early July.

Joe, I've been to Mexico a few times and as nice as it is, if given the choice I tend to gravitate to the east rather than the west. I try and swerve places where you hear 'OH MY GOOWD' every two minutes (outside of the bedroom that is). If I could afford it I'd suggest you and me fuck off to Cambodia and do Ankor Wat. That would be a great laugh but as you know, she who must be obeyed would fucking kill me.

As for Thailand, it's great that it's still safe to visit. I get a bit of an itchy arse if I spend more than a few days on a beach and want to go off and see stuff, but I love the sea too.

As I say, I want a bit of peace and quiet and a few places to point a camera at when I get bored and I'll be perfectly happy. One crucial thing though is to pick an airline with a happy co-pilot.

Please keep the suggestions coming chaps.

Sorry to bump this but anyone else got some advice? Where in Thailand in either late June or early July?

Been loads of times but never in those months as it'll be hot as fuck!

Probably my favourite photos (I know you'll be taking some) were taken on Koh Kood and Koh Mak which are off Koh Chang!

Krabi is also nice with some lovely islands just off it, Raylay Beach being one of those spots but theres loads of islands around.

I was there in December and a bit of Jan and have to say it's probably the safest it's been, i've been when it's kicked off and also was stuck there when they took over the airport.

Kanchanaburi is worth a day trip just to see the bridge and visit the cemetery.

The heat in June - July will be a bigger issue than politics. I personally wouldn't go back there that time of year, and if I did I'd stay up in the northern mountains.

Thanks gents. I have to say you've made me slightly worried about it being too hot. The ice queen will be fine with it but I sweat like a Scot at a salad bar.

Any more advice gratefully received as the aforementioned ice queen is giving me grief about where we're going to go. You'd imagine it was a fucking military campaign rather than a holiday.

Inland gets hot and humid during wet season. The coast does too, but not as bad.. Wet season being from about May until about November, peaking later in the season.

If you're in Bangkok, on the 5th floor of MBK there's a load of camera shops. The Canon one has a mini museum of old film cameras. Just a window display, but interesting.

When you say shot in the face - do you mean a facial from a Ladyboy?

Re: Thailand advice please.
Yes mate , safe if you are sensible . Like anywhere in the world down go falling round the streets at 3am waering your Rolex with a wad of dough in your wallet

I'm in Pattaya for a couple of weeks my sister is coming over so I'll take her down to Koh Chang, I'll tell you how it is when I get back next week

I tend to keep away from Mass tourist areas as I live here , I would advise against phuket used to be lovely but I find it just a rip off now and not a subtle one either

When you say Canchanapuri , I think you mean Kanchanaburi , Thats where the death Railway , Allied Grave yard and Museum are. I wouldnt stay there , its a comfortable day out from Bangkok, 2 hours ish in a motor , also where I live in Phra Nakon Si Ayutthaya, or Ayutthtaya the Phra Nakon bit means Ancient city of. Its the old capital of Thailand going back hundreds of years full of old temples , again a day trip from Bangkok

Whomail me if you want any other info mate , but for safety , you will have no Problem

The problem with May to August is although its hot its the height of the Rainy season , so the Humidity is horrific. You do have fully clear days and fully pissing down days

If you want hot British summer type weather, 29-33 clear skies, very little rain , November , December, Jan and then it cranks up to the hottest part of the year March April where the sun seems to be in the midday position for hours on end. Thailand is a big country , almost 2000 ks long , so depend s where you go to what weather you'll get , but generally its as above
